Year 6 2015/2016

Hello my name is Mrs Burford and I love teaching the older children at Merritts Brook, who are in their final year at our Academy. Mrs Wright is our amazing TA in Year 6 and provides intervention support to the children for English and Maths. This year we have 23 children in our class and we hoping to produce some superb results.

During Year 6 we prepare ourselves for our National SATs Test which take place during the month of May. We work really hard all year in preparing for these tests and hope to do well when they arrive. To find out what out the Year 6 curriculum looks like and the subjects we will be covering, take a look at our page under the curriculum section of the website.

Take a look at our page to find out what we have been up to during 2015 - 2016

Year 6 and Year 5 children became nature explorers recently, when visiting The Wyre Forest. We found bugs, different species of trees and plants and we even found The Stick Man!

World Book Day! - We had a great day today (03/03/16) during World Book Day. Most of us dressed up as one of our favourite characters or authors - see if you can recognise who we are. Also, we took part in a book quiz and learnt what to do if we get writer's block! However the best part was ending with a Mad Hatter's Tea Party from the book Alice in Wonderland!

London 24/02/16 - Wow! What an incredible day we have had today visiting the sights of London. We were able to see Big Ben, The Houses of Parliament, The London Eye, Nelson's Column and Trafalgar Square but the most exciting part was visiting Judge Joseph at The Old Bailey to find out all about how the court system works. Here we also met the Sheriff of London City and had a tour of parts of The Old Bailey which is usually prohibited for members of the public. Thank you to The Children's University who helped make this trip possible!!!

Today (27/01/16) we have had an amazing day. Year 6 visited BPP Law University in Birmingham city centre and found out all about the law, who would be in a court room, and what constitutes being a criminal. We also became judges ourselves and sentenced people we thought we committing crimes. This trip was to prepare us for a visit to the Old Bailey in London in a few weeks, which we now cannot wait to go on!

Today (13th January 2016) we experienced what a dissection lesson is like. To do this we used a sheep heart, in order to identify the specific parts. We were quite nervous at first, however once we got into it, it was amazing and very insightful!

This half term we are reading Blitzed by Robert Swindells. It is all about a young boy who gets transported back in time to London during WW2. We are really loving the story and are eager to find out if George (the young boy) manages to find his way home.

We had a writing focus this week when a mysterious door suddenly appeared in our classroom. As a class we decided that when we went through the door we were transported back to World War 2, which is our current topic this Year and wrote some amazing stories about what it would have been like to experience the war.
Picture 1 We looked at inspiring writing to give us ideas.
Picture 2 Then we slowly opened the door...
Picture 3 Some of others peered through first.
Picture 4 Others tried to barge their way through.
Picture 5 We sometimes knocked to see if anyone was there.
Picture 6 Once through we arrived in 1940!!!
