Year 6 2016/2017

Hello my name is Mrs Burford and I love teaching the older children at Merritts Brook, who are in their final year at our Academy. Ms Dudley is our amazing TA in Year 6 and provides intervention support to the children for English and Maths. This year we have 30 children in our class and we hoping to produce some superb results.

 

During Year 6 we prepare ourselves for our National SATs Test which take place during the month of May. We work really hard all year in preparing for these tests and hope to do well when they arrive. INCREDIBALLZ!!! - Year 6 are launching their new business today called INCREDIBALLZ! They will be making stress balls, bouncy balls and stretchy slime to sell to staff, parents and children at MBA. We are all really excited about our new enterprise and can't wait to get started making our unique, handmade products. More details will follow so keep checking back :) 

SATs Revision - Below, are 2 documents that will provide information and questions about the process of the SATs test in May. There is also a link to an informative video courtesy of the DFE.

Year 6 gave a fantastic performance of what they had been learning as part of their drumming lessons. They worked really well as a team, making sure they listened to each other so they knew when it was their turn to perform. Well done!

Frozen Kingdom Project: For our topic work this term we have been learning about some of the coldest places on earth. As part of this we made iced marbles using a balloon, food colouring and water to see what different shapes and patterns could be formed from the iced crystals. After the experiment we felt that more food colouring would have made the marbles more vivid but we were surprised at the different patterns that were formed within the ice.

Smoothie Making - As part of Healthy Choices week (27/01/17), we made a delicious banana smoothie using the 'Smoothie Bike'. We had to peddle quite hard to blend the ingredients until we had made a nutritious drink, that most of us loved, unless you didn't like bananas!!!

This week (week beginning 9/01/17) we have been learning how to use the formal method when dividing larger numbers and decimals. It was quite difficult at first but after lots of resilience, we conquered this method. Today (13.12.16) we entertained people at Holly Oaks Day Care Centre. It was great to sing some Christmas carols, and spread some happiness to our local community.

Year 6 performed an amazing concert for the rest of the school, showing all the skills that Mark (drumming teacher) had taught them since September. A fantastic experience for everyone involved.

The Planetarium Visit - We had a fantastic experience inside a Planetarium today, where we learnt about light, shadows and reflection. It really helped us to revise all the work we had learnt last half term on the topic of light. Mr Allen commented on what a wonderful class of children.

EVACUATION DAY - On Monday 14th November Year 6 took part in an Evacuation experience. We had ID cards, gas masks and suitcases ready for our new homes. We also experienced what it would be like if we had to take shelter during an air raid. Unfortunately Harry didn't have his ID card and so wasn't able to take shelter!

EVACUATION DAY - On Monday 14th November Year 6 took part in an Evacuation experience. We had ID cards, gas masks and suitcases ready for our new homes. We also experienced what it would be like if we had to take shelter during an air raid. Unfortunately Harry didn't have his ID card and so wasn't able to take shelter! 8

It was an amazing, if surreal experience, as we had to listen out for a bell inside the ball in order to know where to aim at. It made us realise how super the athletes who went to Rio were as they have overcome life changing disabilities but still achieved their goals!
